Matthew Bourne’s The Car Man

Status Live: Bookings now being taken

Matthew Bourne’s award-winning The Car Man is loosely based on Bizet’s ever-popular opera, The Car Man has one of the most thrilling and instantly recognisable scores in New Adventures’ repertoire.

The familiar 19th Century Spanish cigarette factory becomes a greasy 1950’s garage-diner in the American Mid-West where the dreams and passions of a small-town are shattered by the arrival of a handsome and enigmatic stranger. Fuelled by heat and desire, the inhabitants are driven into an unstoppable spiral of greed, lust, betrayal and revenge.

Matthew Bourne’s vivid storytelling combines with one of the most passionately dramatic scores ever written, with music by Terry Davies featuring Rodion Shchedrin’s Carmen Suite (after Bizet’s Carmen), to create a dance thriller like no other.

The Car Man will ignite your senses and leave you breathless.

Southport Flower Show is one of England's most prestigious horticultural shows.  This year the show will focus on health and wellbeing. The benefits of flowers and gardening and the positive impact they make on daily life.

The Show features:

Show Gardens
The centrepiece of the show. Full-scale designed gardens created specifically for the event, the same calibre of craft you'd see at Chelsea or Hampton Court. The brief changes each year; some years formal, some naturalistic, some contemporary.
Competitive Classes
The heart of the show. Classes for flowers (roses, dahlias, sweet peas, chrysanthemums), vegetables (leeks, onions, potatoes, runner beans), floral art, and more. Exhibitors compete nationally. The standard is exceptional. This is where the show's century of heritage lives.
Show Shopping
Enormous range of exhibitors selling tools, plants, garden accessories, gifts, and specialist items you won't find elsewhere. Much better quality than a garden centre sale. Allow time for browsing, and a bag for what you buy.
Food Market
Regional food and drink producers, street food, and specialist suppliers. Quality is consistently high. The food market has become one of the show's highlights in recent years, you could plan to eat lunch here rather than bringing a packed lunch.
Demonstrations
Live demonstrations from horticultural experts, chefs, and craftspeople. Cooking on the outdoor stage, planting and growing workshops, and specialist talks throughout the day.
The Lakeside Reset
New for 2026: a dedicated wellness garden area with sensory planting, water features, and quiet seating. A place to step away from the crowds for half an hour. Particularly good for those who find large shows overwhelming, or who just want to sit somewhere green and quiet.
The Arena
The place for brilliant entertainment and amazing performances especially brought to you from all over the country.  A place to stop for a rest and enjoy the entertainment.
Piazza Stage
The Piazza Stage is right in the centre of the showground and provides continuous ‘easy listening music’ and lots of seating.

Cost £45.00, includes entrance to the Show and transport.

RHS Bridgewater

The former site of Worsley New Hall, in Salford, is a heritage landscape that's been transformed into an iconic RHS Garden. Landscape architect, Tom Stuart-Smith created the masterplan and the Bridgewater team, alongside award-winning garden designers, have brought ‘gardens within a garden’ to life by blending history with world-class horticulture

RHS Garden Bridgewater is the fifth RHS garden.

The garden opened on 18 May 2021. The 154-acre garden is the biggest hands-on horticultural project undertaken in Europe since planning permission was granted in 2017. Around 7.8 million people living within an hour’s journey time of the garden are now able to access world-class horticultural inspiration and expertise, at the closest RHS Garden to a major conurbation.

Named after the Bridgewater Canal that runs to its side, the garden today is an incredible resource for garden enthusiasts and local communities. Its setting draws both city visitors and water wildlife to its unique location, and in its young life as an RHS garden it has already made a big impact. With future plans to develop new areas in the wider landscape, it is exciting for all to watch how this incredible site is growing and thriving.

As part of our visit I have arranges a guided tour of the Chinese Streamside Garden with one of the garden volunteers.
The RHS has been working with the Chinese community in Greater Manchester to create a unique, Chinese-inspired garden at RHS Garden Bridgewater.  Covering just over seven acres, the Chinese Streamside Garden has a central location. Its pretty stream meanders slowly from Ellesmere Lake to Moon Bridge Water. Along the length of the watercourse are a series of smaller pools and weirs, while a sinuous path weaves over five stylised wooden bridges.  This predominantly woodland garden is in its early years but its distinctive character will evolve around specific horticultural themes including a Chinese meadow and a bamboo garden (or ‘Bambusarium’).

Throughout the site, there kiosks where you can purchase drinks and cafes and restaurants where you can purchase snacks and lunch.  There is also a shop and a plant nursery on site.

Cost £21.00 for RHS Members; £36.00 for non RHS Members, includes entrance to garden; tour of Chinese Streamside Garden and transport. Departs Holmes Chapel at 09:00; Goostrey 09:10.  Please be at departure point at least 5 minutes before the departure time.
