Description: The walk is in the White Peak and gives dramatic views from the high ground in the early part of the walk, especially Chrome Hill which is part of the famous “Dragon’s Back.”
Starting from Hollinsclough the walk is in two sections. The first section is hilly with a steady climb round Hollins Hill, passing Tor Rocks then up to the top of Chrome Hill. The climb up Chrome Hill is a rocky path along a ridge to the top to see the great view. There are some quite steep sections and the land drops away steeply to the sides in places. If the weather is wet or windy an alternative route below the hill will be used. This path can also be used by anyone who would prefer a flatter route and rejoin near Parkhouse Hill. The descent down a path to the bottom of Parkhouse Hill is fairly steep and use of walking poles is advised. The second loop is fairly flat and Longnor is reached at 4.5 miles into the walk. Longnor has public toilets and cafes and can be a stop for a packed lunch (there are benches) or something bought in a cafe.
The route back is via Beggar’s Bridge, then a farm track to Glutton Bridge passing through a farmyard where cows cross behind gates. Crossing a bigger road with care a smaller road goes back to the bottom of Parkhouse Hill before following a river and a road back to the start. Some areas have sheep which nay have lambs and care should be taken to avoid causing issues to them.
Estimated walk time: 4 to 4.5 hours.
Distance: 8 miles
Terrain: 1,500 feet of ascent. Mainly footpaths with a rocky section up Chrome Hill. Some roads, especially in Longnor and some farm tracks on the way back from Beggar’s Bridge.
Meeting point: A small car park near the telephone box in Hollinsclough, OS SK 0653 6648, Long Lat 53.19547, -1.90367, What Three Words sympathy.hiked.sandpaper. Due to the small amount of parking space, car sharing from HCCC is encouraged. The start point is around 45 minutes’ drive from Holmes Chapel.
If Hollinsclough is approached from Flash Bar at Axe Edge then the last section is a narrow single track lane but with areas to pass. Care is needed, especially at the lower visibility corners.
Leave Holmes Chapel Community Centre at 9.30am. Meet at Hollinsclough at 10.15am ready to leave at 10:30 am. With a coffee stop on the way that should get us to Longnor before 1pm for lunch.
